Mayor

Hon. Arthur R. Ondish

Welcome to Mount Arlington,

It is with great pride and enthusiasm that I welcome you to our web page.  Thank you for taking the time to visit and learn about all of the wonderful things going on in our small Borough.  On our website you can find a variety of resources such as contact information, our Borough’s history, information about our elected officials, meeting minutes, meeting agendas and links to other services and organizations that can be of service to you.

Some background information about me. I am a lifelong resident of the Borough. My family has deep roots in Mount Arlington dating back to the late 1930’s when my Grandparents built a summer home on Bertrand Island. My mom and dad purchased a home on the island in the 1950’s. They were volunteers in the Borough for over 30 years.  My two brothers and I were raised in that house until I moved out in 1992. I made a big move across the street where I have lived since then with my wife.  It is a great neighborhood and I can’t think of anyplace else I would like to live. My oldest brother still lives across the street and his daughter lives around the corner. We love Bertrand Island! I miss Bertrand Island Park for those who remember. It was a wonderful place to grow up knowing and enjoying during the summer time.

I was employed at JCPL for 20 years, left there and worked at an Engineering Firm for almost 5 years. I was laid off and spent 2 years unemployed. I began working for PSEG in June of 2012 and am happily employed there as a Regional Public Affairs Manager. I am involved in many different organizations locally and state wide. I am always seeking ways to improve our Borough. I have been Mayor for 11 years, working in my third term. I was an elected councilman for 6 years prior, 3 of those years as Council President. So as you can see, I have learned a lot about being an elected official and continue to strive to learn more and continue to make Mount Arlington the best it can be.

We have made many improvements in the Borough since my being elected. I am very proud of how the Borough looks and the tax rate we enjoy. We have one of the lowest tax rates in Morris County which is one of the wealthiest counties in the country. Our infrastructure, buildings, parks, roads and equipment are in great shape and modern thanks to the planning and investments we have made over the last 20 years.  I am very proud to work with a fine Council to carefully monitor where every one of our hard earned tax dollars are spent. Don’t forget, the Council and I live here and pay taxes so we are not happy about any increases but we do need to keep the Borough solvent and secure. We have to pay our bills just like you do at home.

I welcome you to attend a Council meeting if you care to see how we operate. Please visit the Municipal Building if we can be of service. We have a wonderful team there to help you. You will always be greeted kindly and with the attitude of service. I am very proud of our team in the Borough. Our Police are there for your 24/7 should you have an emergency. Our Fire Department is ready to assist in an instant. Thank you to all who volunteer their time to help others in need. I am also grateful and appreciative of all the volunteers who fill our boards and committees to help keep the Borough moving forward. If you have an interest in investing some time giving back to the Borough, you are always welcome to reach out to me and let me know that y0u are interested. My email address and cell phone number are on the web site.

Please do reach out to me if you have suggestions or feedback on how we can make the Borough better. We are always looking at ways to be as efficient as possible. I would encourage you to let us know if something is a concern to you. Rather than let it bother you, reach out and find out why we do something a certain way. Maybe it is something we need to address and change if there is an improvement that can be made. We won’t know unless you reach out.

Thank you for visiting our site. There is much information available and we are always updating and striving to make the site a place you enjoy visiting and can be educated about the goings on in the Borough.

I am always available to assist you if you need my help. Just reach out. If you are a new resident, don’t hesitate to give me a call to introduce yourself and maybe I can help answer questions you may have.

Yours in Service

Mayor Art Ondish
