Congressman Kean Secures $560,000 in Federal Funding for Mount Arlington Borough Stormwater Management Improvement Project

The Borough of Mount Arlington extends its sincere thanks to Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. for securing $560,000 in federal funding to support the Memorial Pond Stormwater Improvement Project. This significant investment will help Mount Arlington advance the dredging of Memorial Pond, an important project with benefits extending well beyond the Borough to the broader Lake Hopatcong watershed.

The federal funding will support critical elements of the project, including sediment data collection and analysis, surveying, engineering, regulatory requirements and dredging of Memorial Pond.

The importance of this project is directly connected to the health and water quality of Lake Hopatcong. Memorial Pond plays a critical role in managing stormwater and serves as a regional basin before water enters the Lake. The Pond receives stormwater runoff from the entire sub watershed above it, resulting in the accumulation of sediment and the gradual infilling of the Pond. After approximately 25 years since the last dredging, restoring the Pond’s capacity is an important step in maintaining its ability to manage stormwater and sediment.

“We sincerely thank Congressman Kean for his partnership and for securing this funding to restore Memorial Pond’s ability to capture sediment before it reaches Lake Hopatcong,” said Michael Stanzilis, Mayor of Mount Arlington “This federal funding provides Mount Arlington with critical resources to move this project forward and represents an investment not only in our Borough, but in the health and future of Lake Hopatcong.”

Lake Hopatcong provides significant environmental services and recreational opportunities throughout the region. Fishing, boating, swimming, beach use and other activities draw residents and visitors to the Lake and contribute to the quality of life and local economy of the surrounding communities.

The connection between Memorial Pond and Lake Hopatcong is particularly important at Mount Arlington’s Municipal Beach. The Pond and the stream flowing through Memorial Park drain into Lake Hopatcong at the Municipal Beach, which is one of only two beaches open to the public on the Lake and consequently sees heavy recreational use.

Addressing sediment accumulation at Memorial Pond is therefore an important component of the broader effort to protect Lake Hopatcong’s water quality. By restoring the Pond’s capacity to manage stormwater and sediment, the dredging project supports a regional approach to watershed management and the long-term protection of the Lake.

Mount Arlington has worked closely with the Lake Hopatcong Commission and the surrounding lake municipalities of Roxbury, Jefferson and Hopatcong to improve the water quality of Lake Hopatcong. The Memorial Pond project is another example of the importance of cooperation among the communities that share the Lake and its watershed.

The $560,000 federal investment secured by Congressman Kean provides meaningful support as Mount Arlington moves toward completion of the Memorial Pond dredging project. The project represents a long-term investment in stormwater management, watershed health and the continued protection of Lake Hopatcong as an environmental and recreational resource.

The Borough of Mount Arlington is grateful to Congressman Kean for recognizing the importance of Memorial Pond and for advocating for federal resources to help address this critical infrastructure need.
